Galileo-assisted robot to tackle the weed Rumex obtusifolius and increase the profitability and sustainability of dairy farming

The project is funded by the EU Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme. Apart from DTU, other project partners are: Acorde Technologies (Spain), Institut de L'elevage (France), Stichting Wageningen Research, Loon- en grondverzetbedrijf Koonstra BV, Pekkeriet Dalfsen BV and Machinefabriek Steketee BV (The Netherlands). Arla Foods A/S is actively supporting the project.

The main objective of this project is to deliver robot weeding for herbicide-free weed control in dairy farming. GALIRUMI will focus on the broad-leaved dock (Rumex obtusifolius L.) and will consider 2 different approaches for controlling it, namely electrocution and frequent defoliation.The project will integrate off-the-self hardware components and mature software technologies (e.g. deep learning for weed detection) with high-precision Galileo positioning. The project is targeting to develop a “robot-as-service” application that uses EGNSS data for agriculture applications. 
 
The primary role of DTU in GALIRUMI is to provide the 2D and 3D perception modules for detection and localization of weeds. Principal Investigator for DTU: Associate Professor Lazaros Nalpantidis.
